Supervisor of Elections Office To Hold “College Week” Across Palm Beach County

West Palm Beach, Fla. - March 16, 2007 - The Supervisor of Elections Office is hosting its first official “College Week” voter registration drive beginning March 20th to encourage the students at the university level to register. Campuses across the county will be participating in the drive which, has been very successful with high school students in the past. The Elections Office also hopes to encourage the students to become active in the electoral process as well as volunteer to be poll workers.

Students will have the opportunity to register, update their current information, request an absentee ballot and possibly demo a voting machine. They can sign up for temporary staff positions and volunteer opportunities for community outreach. Each registrant will be given a specially designed “iVote” red, white and blue silicon bracelet.

The college voter registration drive will take place at FAU in Boca Raton and Jupiter as well as various PBCC campuses, Palm Beach Atlantic, Lynn University and a few others schools throughout the County. The bi-annual iVote Project, originally started at the high school level under the leadership of Adina Serell, special projects coordinator for the Supervisor of Elections Office.

“There are almost 42 million 18-29 year old citizens in the U.S., or 21% of the electorate,” said Serell. “In the past two elections, (2004 and 2006,) young voter turnout in general has increased, which is encouraging. Looking to 2008, we are likely to see this number increase again and locally we hope this outreach will positively impact those statistics,” she added.
