Do I have to pick a party when I register?

No, it is not necessary to pick a political party when you register. However, Florida is a Closed Primary State, which means that you must be registered with a political party to vote for a specific party's candidate in the Primary Election. You may change your party affiliation at any time, but it must be done 29 days before a Primary Election in order to be valid for that election. If you are registered with No Party Affiliation (NPA), you will still be eligible to vote and your ballot in the Primary Election will only include non-partisan issues and candidates. However, party affiliation does not matter for the General Election as voters are able to vote for whatever candidate that they prefer.

What is Amendment 4?

On January 8, 2019, the Voting Restoration Amendment (Amendment 4) went into effect, restoring the voting rights of Floridians with felony convictions after they complete all terms of their sentence. The amendment does not apply to those convicted of murder or sexual offenses. More information and resources can be found on our Amendment 4 page.
